The Hawaiian Islands are such a diverse vacation destination that there is something for everyone! I was asked by some friends of mine to compile a quick list of the best places to visit on each island because they want to go, but they cannot stay forever. So here it is:
Hawaii Island or “the Big Island”
Split into two sides: Hilo & Kona
Kona is more of a resort area, while Hilo is more laid back and local
Must do:
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park- visit the Kilauea Caldera, take a cruise to the Thurston Lava Tube, walk through the lava fields, drive down the Chain of Craters Road
Akaka Falls- located on the Hamakua Coast, only a half-hour paved trail hike through banana plants, bamboo groves, and orchids
Maui- “The Valley Isle”
Haleakala National Park A dormant volcano that literally means “House of the Sun”, comprises 75% of Maui island is home to rainforests, desert-like conditions, and much more
Oahu- “The Gathering Place”
Kailua Beach Park or Lanikai Beach Park Home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Check out the “twin islands” and the clear, turquoise water
Kauai- “The Garden Isle”
The Na Pali Coast- home to one of the most unspoiled natural beauties in all of Hawaii and maybe even the world.
There are thousands of foot cliffs with valleys and hidden beaches.
Accessible via hike, boat, or helicopter tour
Molokai- “The Friendly Isle”
Molokai’s Sea Cliffs- sea cliffs that reach the highest peak in the world- 2,000 feet! The cliffs surround the former leper colony of Kalaupapa—it can be reached via mule or airplane!
Lanai- “Pineapple Island”
The Cathedrals- the most popular diving spot, named for their underwater pinnacle formations formed by underwater lava tubes and illuminated by shimmering rays of light
